Most people hold on to their Apple Watch for a while, which makes buying the latest one a safe bet. If all you want is a basic smartwatch, the SE will serve you-or your nana, or recent college graduate-perfectly well. I like how small it is compared to many other watches, coming in a teeny 40-mm case size, with a nylon back to make it even lighter. It also has the newly redesigned Compass app, fall detection, support for international roaming, and works with Family Setup. It has the latest S8 chip that shows up in the Series 8 as well as newer features like Crash Detection to call your emergency contact and emergency responders if you've been in a car accident and are unresponsive for 10 seconds. The SE is compatible with WatchOS 9, which is where many of the latest and most exciting fitness features show up (as well as the battery-extending Low Power Mode). The smaller display is noticeable after a year of testing the larger-screen Series 7, and if you have AirTags, it doesn't have the ultrawideband chip for precise tracking.īut unless you have a specific use case in mind-say, you are trying to get pregnant-you probably don't need those things. It doesn't have the flashiest standout features, like the ability to check your blood oxygen, check your electrocardiogram (ECG), or measure whether you're ovulating via the temperature sensors. If you have any doubt as to whether you should get an Apple Watch at all, the SE is Apple's entry-level option. The company has stopped selling last year's Series 7 but you can still find them at online retailers (sometimes for a significant discount), along with older models. But which version should you buy? Apple launched the Series 8, a new SE, and a rugged Ultra sports watch in 2022. Your calculations aren’t stuck on one device but rather readily appear right on your iPhone, iPad, and Mac.We on the WIRED Gear team (and millions of people around the world) agree: If you have an iPhone, the Apple Watch is the best wearable to go with it. The new Calcbot is also rather customizable with several themes that change the look of the app by applying different colors throughout the user interface. You can easily plug these old formulas into to calculations or share both formulas and results over email. Calcbot presents a tape of everything you input, offering up the ability to reference calculation history. So what does Calcbot offer over Apple’s Calculator app? For starters, the iPad doesn’t include the Calculator app found on the iPhone and iPod touch, but Calcbot still goes a little further. Calcbot 2.0 offers a user interface that fits the latest iOS design language and packs in the same conversion features. While Calcbot was left mostly untouched since the days of 3.5-inch iPhones like the iPhone 4 and 4s (the last version was advertised as iOS 4 ready), Calcbot 2.0 takes full advantage of various iPhone display sizes available now, including the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 and 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus, and Convertbot users will be happy to know the new version of Calcbot offers up all the conversion functionality found in the Mac version of the advanced calculator app.įor iPad users, Calcbot never got the letterbox or scaling treatment as iPad display sizes, resolutions, and aspect ratios haven’t changed over the years, but the app’s design did appear aged. While the new version of Calcbot is free, an in-app purchase unlocks additional features including what was previously a separate app called Convertbot. The completely new version follows the debut of Calcbot for Mac last fall and includes support for quick iCloud sync between the Mac and iOS versions. As the ‘bot’ theme implies, Calcbot approaches the stock calculator experience and applies character through animations and sounds while delivering more function than the out-of-the-box calculator from Apple. Tapbots, the developers behind the popular third party Twitter app Tweetbot, is out today with a major new version of their advanced calculator app Calcbot.
